Psalm 46:1

Few things are more important to us than our safety and security. We depend on rules and regulations for our well-being and protection. We have the police to protect us and the military to guard us. We rely on individuals we have never seen or met to enforce laws we have never read and to be alert if an enemy threatens us if there is a national emergency. Yet, despite all the layers of defense that have been placed around us, the threats of life continue to surround us and invade our spaces. We search for a moment of peace in these times of turbulence and turmoil.

However, as Christians, we must always remember that we have a resource that is always available. The Psalmist reminds us that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Not only are we reminded that God is our refuge and strength but that He is ever-present! Not might be or could be but is ever-present.

The word refuge means shelter. When the rains fall and the rivers rise, we can always find a place of security in the arms of God. When days are dark and nights are long, we always have His light to shine before us and around us and keep us from becoming lost or falling. When sickness strikes and illness lingers, we always have the assurance of His presence and peace.

And His strength – His mighty power – is there as our shield and sword. No one would go into any battle without the proper equipment to protect and defend themselves. Here, however, we are reminded that the battle belongs to our God and He will not only fight for us but will protect us from anyone who would hurt or harm us, destroy or defeat us.

And we can take great assurance that His refuge and strength are ever-present. He is with us – not He might be with us – wherever we are. We have no reason to be frightened when the world seems to be closing in on us and the pressures of life are about to overcome us. God: our refuge and strength – is right here, right now.

Prayer: Help us to realize, Lord, Your ever-present presence in our lives and that You are constantly involved in anything and everything that concerns us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Scripture for Today: Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
A king called his wise men together and commanded them to identify the world's greatest truth. Once they agreed on what this truth was, they were to inscribe it in his ring. He wanted one truth that would provide him guidance and give him hope and help for every situation he faced and each case he had to decide.
Many months later the wise men came back with the words they chose for the inscription: “This too shall pass.”
It is significant that the phrase “It came to pass” occurs 457 times in the Bible. Those words are echoed by the
Psalmist when he wrote, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”
We sometimes become involved in situations that are beyond our strength and exceed our courage. We awaken one day to realize that what we thought would never end or bring us unending happiness, has evaporated into the air. We become discouraged by the endless wars, devastating earthquakes, destructive hurricanes, uncontrollable prices and see no end in sight. No night is so dark nor day so cloudy that cancels the hope that “This too shall pass.”
Prayer: Lord, help us to understand the power of Your love, the goodness of Your grace, the extent of Your mercy and Your readiness to help. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Scripture for Today: Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
Two men were hunting in Africa. As they were walking across a shaky bridge, two lions started to chase them.
Realizing they may not make it, James said, “Pray, John!”
John, frightened, said, “All I can remember is: ‘Lord, make us truly grateful for what we’re about to receive.’”
“Not for the lions, John, for us!”
Sadly, it seems that most of the time when we call upon the Lord for His help, guidance, peace or comfort, it is when we are facing life’s biggest threats or problems. When life is pleasant and pleasurable we rarely pause to think about Him or thank Him for the good times. But when problems erupt and times are difficult we may not know how to begin or what to say. Perhaps it’s because we rarely pray when the sun is shining and good things are happening.
So what do we do? Develop the habit of praying at all times, and soon we will discover that “God is a very present help in times of trouble.”
Prayer: Lord, it seems that when I pray, I realize how much I truly need You and how little I can do for myself. I do know that there is never a time when I can get by without Your help: in Your Name. Amen.
